Established 1857

Winter Harbor Light is located on Mark Island near Winter Harbor. The lighthouse is not accessible to the public but can be seen distantly from Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park or by boat cruises in the area. Before automation, this light was considered to be a good family light station and only housed nine families in a 76-year span. In 1933, the light was discontinued and in 1936 the island was purchased by Bernice Richmond, who wrote the book, “Our Island Lighthouse.”
